White Sox Exceeding Expectations After April

Chicago, IL- Baseball seasons first month is over, and the White Sox are proving everybody wrong. They currently stand at 14-15 in third place in the AL Central. The two teams ahead of the White Sox are the Royals and the Tigers, who also have fourteen wins. Rick Hahn & Co. had a successful off-season, and so far those moves are paying off. Core players such as Adam Eaton and Jose Abreu are producing at the Major League level. However, they aren't the only guys carrying this White Sox team.

Lets take a look at some of the players who have contributed to the White Sox early success:

Chris Sale- Even though he's on the disabled list, he has lead the rotation so far this year. He is currently 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA. He has only started three games, but has pitched 27.1 innings. He is holding opponents to a .168 average, and has a WHIP of .84.

Zach Putnam- Even though he's only twenty-six, Putnam has been a journeyman in his career. He has spent time with the Indians, the Rockies, the Cubs, and now the White Sox. However, it looks like he has found a home on the south side of Chicago. He has appeared in five games this season, and owns an ERA of 1.80. He is holding opponents to a .206 average, and has a WHIP of 1.00.

John Danks- Mr. Danks has been a pleasant surprise this season. After ending the 2013 season with a 4-14 record and ERA of 4.75, it looks like John Danks has recovered from Tommy John Surgery. He has started this year with a 2-1 record and a ERA of 3.48. He's only holding opponents to a .233 average, but his WHIP is a little high at 1.42.

Tyler Flowers- The average just hasn't dropped for Tyler yet. He has 29 hits so far, which is close to the 50 he had last season. He's been taking pitches, as shown in his .398 OBP. His fielding percentage is good at .989, but he has allowed 13 stolen bases this season.

Jose Abreu- Abreu is looking like the player the Sox thought they signed to a six-year $68 million dollar deal. Currently Abreu has 10 HR and 32 RBI. He is first in home runs, and broke the record for most RBI by a rookie. If the season ended today, he would be a top choice for the AL ROTY Award and the AL MVP.

Adam Dunn- The White Sox Designated Hitter is looking to cash in another big payday this off-season. He is currently batting .269/.402/.513/.915 with 5 HR and 12 RBI.

Alexei Ramirez- The thirty-two year old shortstop is off to a hot start. Alexei has a line of .351/.375/.535/.910 with 4 HR and 19 RBI. He has been solid fielding with a .993 fielding percentage and twenty-one double plays.

Adam Eaton- The White Sox center fielder has looked like a steal this season. Acquired in the Hector Santiago trade, Eaton came over from the Diamondbacks. He is currently batting .281/.364/.385/.749 with 1 HR and 14 RBI. He has a .981 fielding percentage in CF, which is pretty good.

Dayan Viciedo- The Cuban Missile has launched this year. Viciedo is batting .348/.410/.528/.938 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. He hasn't been that well this year in the outfield though, as he has four errors.

With all the success of these hot players, there has been some cold ones too:

Ronald Belisario, Scott Downs, and Matt Lindstrom. These arms have not been successful this season. Belisario is 1-3 with a 6.32 ERA and a WHIP of 1.28.  Opponents are embarrassing him with an average of .271 against him. Scott Downs hasn't been more effective, as he is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA. Opponents are hitting .286 against him with an awful WHIP of 1.89. Matt Lindstrom, the White Sox closer, has already blown three saves in six opportunities.

Felipe Paulino- The former Royal who was a low-risk high-reward signing for Hahn, hasn't been successful this season. He is on the disabled list currently, but his numbers before were a 0-2 record in four game starts with a 11.29 ERA and an average against of .389 with a WHIP of 2.56.

Alejamdro De Aza- De Aza has not looked like the career .268/.331/.405/.736 hitter he has been. He is currently batting .185/.255/.359/.614 as the everyday left fielder. He may have 4 HR and 11 RBI, but for him to be playing everyday the average needs to increase.

So far, the White Sox have been playing average baseball. For the team to get better, the cold players need to pick up the production this team needs along with the hot players continuing their success. There is still five months left of the baseball season, so this team has time to figure out what needs to be done in order to make the playoffs.

Scott Carroll: An Example To Never Give Up

   (White Sox Twitter)

Chicago, IL- Making the Major Leagues is not something every Minor League ball player achieves. Some of them spend their whole career riding on buses to other cities to face other Minor League ball clubs. Some of them hang up the cleats after never getting the call up. Others wait long , and finally receive the call up they desire.

Scott has given the game of baseball many chances in his career. After requiring Tommy John surgery following the 2012 season, he was on the verge of walking away from the game he loved so much. He was twenty-seven, and spent six years in the Minors at the time. However, Carroll decided not to give up just yet. He came back after surgery to play in 22 games in 2013. He wanted to achieve his goal, and was determined to make it to the Majors.

Scott Carroll was brought back this season to play for the Knights. According to Baseball Reference, he started the year at Charlotte going 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA. With the strong start, he was promoted to the White Six due to injuries.

Being twenty-nine doesn't mean anything to Scott, as his dream finally came true today. The third-round pick of the 2007 draft for the Cincinnati Reds made his Major League debut against the Rays today. He pitched well, as he tossed 7.1 innings of two-run ball. He earned a win on top of his great performance. With his great start, the White Sox looked forward to seeing some great pitching out of the rookie. Many injuries have occurred to the pitching staff, and Scott Carroll has the potential to shine on a White Sox team that looks to stand out against its foes.

   (David Banks/Getty Images)

Chicago, IL- Scott Carroll earned the win in his first start of his MLB career. Jose Abreu helped the White Sox win 9-2 against the Rays.

Adam Eaton's bat came alive, as he went 3 for 5 in the leadoff spot. Marcus Semien hit well behind Eaton, going 2 for 5 with 1 RBI. Jose Abreu lead the offense for the White Sox, going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI. He had a two-run home run, and a two-run RBI single. Alexei Ramirez continued his great month of April, going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. Scott Carroll made his first start at the Major Leagues, as he went 7.1 innings, gave up six hits, one earned run, two walks, and struck out three.

Ben Zobrist went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot for the Rays. Evan Logoria was the only player who had an RBI for the Rays, as he had RBI single in the top of the eighth. David Price continued his struggles this season, as he went six innings, gave up nine hits, six earned runs, one walk, and struck out seven.

The final game of this three-game series is on April 28, 2014. Jake Odorizzi will face Andre Rienzo at 7:10 PM CT.

4/26/14: White Sox Shutout By Rays

Chicago, IL- Ryan Hanigan hit the go-ahead two-run RBI double in the top of the second as the Rays shutout the White Sox 4-0.

James Loney had a hot day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI. Yunel Escobar went 2 for 4 in the game. Ryan Hanigan, the Rays new catcher, went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. The White Sox were shut down by Cesar Ramos, as he went five innings and only gave up five hits and two walks.

Paul Konerko and Gordon Beckham both collected two hits, but the rest of the offense could only manage one hit. John Danks started, as he went 5.2 innings and gave up seven hits, four earned runs, four walks, and collected four strikeouts.

The White Sox play the next game of this three-game series April 27, 2014. Scott Carroll is making his first Major League start against former Cy Young Award winner David Price at 1:10 PM CT.

4/25/14: Abreu & Co Walk-Off On The South Side Against Tampa

                                                   (White Sox Twitter)

Chicago, IL- Jose Abreu hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of ninth as the White Sox beat the Rays 9-6.

Adam Eaton returned to the lineup today, as he went 1 for 5 with 1 RBI. Jose Abreu went 3 for 5 with 6 RBI. Besides the grand slam, he had an RBI single and a solo home run. Alexei Ramirez and Alejandro De Aza both went 2 for 4. Tyler Flowers went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Erik Johnson only lasted 1.2 innings as he gave up four earned runs to the Rays. Zach Putnam pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief with a strikeout. Matt Lindstrom broke up the tie in the top of the ninth, but went on to win the game.

The Rays may have had ten hits and eleven walks, but they only scored six runs. Ben Zobrist went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI. Evan Longeria gave the Rays a 6-4 lead in the top of the ninth with a two-run blast, but sadly for the Rays it wasn't the game winning hit. The Rays third basemen went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Chris Archer started for the Rays, as he went six innings, gave up nine hits, four earned runs, and collected four strikeouts. Grant Balfour blew his first save of the season.

The White Sox play their next game against the Rays on April 26, 2014. Cesar Ramos will face off against John Danks at 6:10 PM CT.

White Sox Acquire Some Pitching With An Odd Move

                                          (Getty Images)

Chicago, IL- The White Sox need some pitching, like badly. Chris Sale is on the DL along with Felipe Paulino and Nate Jones. Charlie Leesman was sent back down to the minors this week. So the White Sox have hit the drawing board, and acquired Hector Noesi.

Acquiring Noesi was an odd move for the White Sox, as he has struggled the last few years in his career. Originally signed by the Yankees in 2004, Hector Noesi was part of the trade that sent Michael Pineda to the Bronx. He was put in the starting rotation in 2012 for the Mariners, where he had stats of a 2-12 record, 5.82 ERA, 5.53 FIP, and WHIP of 1.369. Last year, Noesi spent much of the season at AAA where he was 3-3 with a 5.83 ERA. Earlier this season, he was traded to the Texas Rangers where he had an ERA of 11.81 and a FIP of 2.67. He also had a WHIP of 2.438 in Texas.

The White Sox faced Noesi earlier this year, and he had a poor outing against the team. In that outing on April 20, 2014 Noesi gave up seven hits, seven earned runs, and one walk in one inning pitched.

Hopefully in Chicago he can find his groove, but his career lines don't show any success at the Major League level.

Chicago, IL- Miguel Cabrera hit the go-ahead two-run RBI single in top of the seventh as the Tigers beat the White Sox 7-4.

Rajai Davis went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI for the Tigers in the leadoff spot. He hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, and had an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Both Nick Castellanos and Bryan Holaday went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer pitched six innings of two-run ball, and also struck out ten White Sox batters. Joe Nathan earned his fourth save of the season.

Cleanup man Adam Dunn went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI. Dayan Viciedo continued with his hot bat, going 3 for 4. Alexei Ramirez went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. He had a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single. Gordon Beckham went 0 for 4 with 3 K in his first game back in a White Sox uniform. Jose Quintana started for the White Sox, as he went six innings, gave up seven hits, three earned runs, and struck out three. Maikel Cleto and Daniel Webb both gave up a combined four runs out of the bullpen.

The White Sox start a four-game series with the Rays at the Cell next. The first game will consist of a match-up between young nighties Chris Archer and Erik Johnson. First pitch is at 7:10 PM CT on April 25, 2014.

Gordon Beckham To Return Tomorrow

(Photo credit to J.J. Miller Photography)

Chicago, IL- According to Scott Merkin of MLB.com, Gordon Beckham will be back on the White Sox tomorrow. This move sends Charlie Leesman back down to the Minors.

Gordon Beckahm, a career .249 hitter, has spent his entire five-year career with the White Sox. He was drafted by the team as the number eight overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft. Last season, Beckham batted .267 with an OBP of .322 with 5 HR and 24 RBI in the 103 games he played.

Marcus Semien, who has spent fifteen games at second this year, will probably be moved to third base or a utility role. So far this season he has hit .234 with 3 HR.

Charlie Leesman will be sent back down to the Minors. At the Major League level he has career numbers of 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA. However, in the Minors he has career numbers of 53-33 with an ERA of 3.39.

Chicago, IL- Marcus Semien came up clutch, as he hit the go-ahead grand slam in the White Sox 6-4 win over the Tigers.

Matt Lindstrom recorded his third save of the season.

J.D. Martinez and Austin Jackson both drove in two runs tonight for the Tigers. Victor Martinez went 2 for 4. Drew Smyly pitched six innings of two run ball, but he didn't get the win as Evan Reed lost the game for the Tigers.

4/22/14: Sale's Absence Hurts White Sox In Loss To Tigers

Chicago, IL- Alex Avila hit the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the fifth as the Tigers rolled past the White Sox 8-6. Adam Dunn hit a two-run home run in the ninth, but the rest of the offense couldn't tie the ballgame after that.

Rajai Davis went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI leading off the the Tigers. Ian Kinsler, the player acquired for Prince Fiedler, went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Miguel Cabrera, who has been struggling this season, found his tune going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. He had an RBI double and a two-run home run. Just like Cabrera, Alex Avila found his grove at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI. Justin Verlander started for the Tigers, going seven innings, giving up eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, while collecting seven strikeouts. Phil Coke had a rough outing out of the pen, as he gave up three earned runs in under an inning pitched.

Jose Abreu helped knock in some runs again for the Sox, as he went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. He hit a solo shot in the top of the first off of Justin Verlander. Dayan Viciedo had four hits, which is a career-high in a Major League Baseball game for the Cuban outfielder. Charlie Leesman, who started for Chris Sale, only went 2.2 innings, as he gave up nine hits, six earned runs, and one walk.

The White Sox play the third game of the four-game series on April 23, 2014. Andre Rienzo will be taking the mound for the White Sox against Drew Smyly at 6:08 CT at Comerica Park.

Tori Hunter hit well for the Tigers, as he went 2 for 4. Anibal Sanchez started for the Tigers, going 6.1 innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs, one walk, while collecting five strikeouts.

Chris Sale Likely To Miss Tuesday Start

Chicago IL- Chris Sale usually finishes a night sore after starting a ball game. However, Chris Sale is still sore from his Thursday night start.

On Thursday night against the Red Sox, Chris Sale threw a career high 127 pitches. He has experienced issues like this in 2011 when he transferred from the starting rotation to the closer's role.

An MRI has not been taken, nor will be needed for Sale says manager Robin Ventura.

Andre Rienzo would start on Tuesday, and a call up for a minor league starter would pitch Wednesday.

The White Sox are hoping what's holding Sale back isn't too serious.

The Gap That's Keeping The White Sox From Contending

Chicago, IL- It may just be four weeks into the season, but the White Sox are in the AL Central division race. Currently the Sox sit at 9-10 two games out of first place. Every team in the division has nine wins besides the Cleveland Indians. The White Sox look on pace to actually defy analyst's predictions, as many analysts have them under .500 to finish the season. Even though the White Sox are under .500 at the moment, it doesn't look like it's going to stay that way.

A key part of the White Sox competing has been their offense. According to MLB.com, the White Sox are tied in baseball with the Rockies for runs scored. Both teams have scored 106 runs. Without a doubt, the Rockies are a very good offensive team. However, the White Sox offense has shined this year too. According to MLB.com, Adam Eaton is fourth in the American League in OBP with .373. He has been thriving for the White Sox as their new lead-off man. Alexei Ramirez has been ranked second in baseball for offensive shortstops. He currently has a line of .360/.400/.587/.987 with 4 HR and 14 RBI. The numbers might not stay that hot, but it's a surprise to see Alexei hitting this well early in the season. He has a career AVG of .250 in the month of March and April according to FanGraphs. Dayan Viciedo has also had a hot bat in the beginning of the season. According to FanGraphs, Viciedo is career .249 hitter in March and April, but so far he has hit .321. Is Viciedo poised for a breakout year? Is he finally going to be the player the White Sox thought they signed in 2008 out of Cuba? Only time will tell, but so far he has been good. Adam Dunn has been doing well with a line of  .269/.418/.481/.899 with 3 HR and 8 RBI according to FanGraphs. According to MLB.com, Jose Abreu, the big off-season signing for the White Sox, has a disappointing slash line of  .243/337/.541/.878, but has shown the pop with 5 HR and 17 RBI. Connor Gillaspie has also been playing well with a line of .305/353/.407/.760 with 12 RBI. One player who has been hitting well, but is known to be an early fluke is Tyler Flowers. So far, Tyler has a line of .389/.421/.463/.884 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. All in All, the White Sox offense has been the highlight of their play so far.

On the other hand, The White Sox pitching has been the problem for the team. The pitching ranks dead last in the American League with a 5.18 ERA according to MLB.com. If the pitching was better the White Sox would look like a true contender, but that's not the truth. The White Sox pitching also is dead last in WHIP with 1.53 according to MLB.com. However, Chris Sale has not been a problem, as he has numbers right now of 3-0, 2.30 ERA, .168 AVG, .84 WHIP, and 29 K in 27.1 IP according to MLB.com. Besides Sale, the White Sox starting pitching has an ERA of 5.29 with a FIP of 5.05 according to FanGraphs. That is not good because this team can't just depend on Sale to carry them to the postseason. The bullpen has also been terrible with many veterans not getting the job done. According to Spencer Impellizzeri of Rant Sports, Matt Lindstrom is only 1-for-4 in save opportunities. Also according to Spencer Impellizzeri of Rant Sports, two veteran free agent signings Ronald Belisario and Scott Downs both have  ERAs north of 8.00. Nate Jones hasn't been good either, but he is heading to the DL. To sum up, the White Sox pitching needs to improve if they are going to contend, or some trades will have to occur.

The White Sox fielding has not been bad as it is ranked ninth in the American League with a .981 FPCT.

So far, the White Sox have been an average team all around. The hitting has been getting the job done, but the pitching can't live up to that success. Some moves might have to be made to improve the pitching, but it can't be done from the minors. The White Sox are trying to help find Tommy Hanson get his groove back, but he is not a plan a situation to improve the rotation. The team might need to move Adam Dunn or hope that Felipe Paulino improves when he comes back so they can acquire the arms that they need. However, moving Dunn would hurt the White Sox offense unless they sign Kendrys Morales after the First-Year Player Draft. Time is not running out for the White Sox just yet, but if they want to close the gap blocking them from contention they have to make a move soon.

4/20/14: White Sox Crush Rangers In Arlington

Chicago IL- Connor Gilliaspie hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, as the White Sox rolled past the Rangers 16-2.

Dayan Viciedo, Jordan Danks, and Jose Abreu all homered in the game. Marcus Seimen went 4 for 6 with 4 RBI. He had an RBI single and bases-clearing RBI triple. Jose Abreu went 3 for 6 with 3 RBI. He hit a two-run home run, and had an RBI double. Dayan Viciedo went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI. He hit a solo shot, and had an RBI single. Some other notable players were Alexei Ramirez and Tyler Flowers. Ramirez went 2 for 5, while Flowers went 3 for 4. Erik Johnson tossed five innings of two-run ball in the win.

The whole Ranger's offense struggled, but they still collected six walks. Robbie Ross started for the Rangers, as he went 5.1 innings, giving up seven hits, seven runs, four earned runs, and struck out eight.

The White Sox start a new series against the Detroit Tigers on April 21, 2014. John Danks will face Anibal Sanchez at 6:08 CT at Comerica Park.
