4/22/14: Sale's Absence Hurts White Sox In Loss To Tigers


Chicago, IL- Alex Avila hit the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the fifth as the Tigers rolled past the White Sox 8-6. Adam Dunn hit a two-run home run in the ninth, but the rest of the offense couldn't tie the ballgame after that.

Rajai Davis went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI leading off the the Tigers. Ian Kinsler, the player acquired for Prince Fiedler, went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Miguel Cabrera, who has been struggling this season, found his tune going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. He had an RBI double and a two-run home run. Just like Cabrera, Alex Avila found his grove at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI. Justin Verlander started for the Tigers, going seven innings, giving up eight hits, two earned runs, two walks, while collecting seven strikeouts. Phil Coke had a rough outing out of the pen, as he gave up three earned runs in under an inning pitched.

Jose Abreu helped knock in some runs again for the Sox, as he went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI. He hit a solo shot in the top of the first off of Justin Verlander. Dayan Viciedo had four hits, which is a career-high in a Major League Baseball game for the Cuban outfielder. Charlie Leesman, who started for Chris Sale, only went 2.2 innings, as he gave up nine hits, six earned runs, and one walk.

The White Sox play the third game of the four-game series on April 23, 2014. Andre Rienzo will be taking the mound for the White Sox against Drew Smyly at 6:08 CT at Comerica Park.
